Also known as the Sultans Palace, the Ujumbe Palace is located in the center of the medina of Mutsamudu, right next to the mosque. It was built with lava blocks and offers an excellent example of Swahili architecture. The interior is decorated with calligraphy and Arab-Islamic designs, creating brilliant interior spaces which accentuate the historical importance of the palace. In the early 19th century, the Ujumbe Palace became the political focal point of the Comoros. Having survived several dynasties of sultans, the palace became a symbol of the influence of this era. Important treaties and decrees, including those abolishing slavery, agreements with France, and agreements with the United States, were concluded at Ujumbe Palace.
